My Visit to Donaldson Trust to Support Neurodivergent Services in West Lothian

Earlier this week, I had the privilege of visiting The Donaldson Trust, an organisation at the forefront of supporting neurodivergent individuals in West Lothian and beyond. The Trust provides essential services to improve access to education, skills, and employment for young people and adults, ensuring that every individual has the opportunity to thrive.

As someone with experience working across local services, I understand the challenges neurodivergent individuals and their families face in accessing health, social care, education, and employment opportunities. During my visit, I met with leaders from Donaldsons Vibe, Gate, and Treehouse services, as well as educators from the Sensational Learning Centre, to discuss the unique support they provide and the barriers that still exist for the neurodivergent community.

Recognising the Importance of Tailored Support

The work being done at The Donaldson Trust is truly inspiring. Their services are designed to provide tailored support, helping individuals build confidence, gain skills, and navigate the challenges they may face in education and employment. One key area of discussion was their Connect service, which advises employers on creating neuro-inclusive workplaces. With employment gaps for neurodivergent individuals still a significant issue, initiatives like these are vital in ensuring equal opportunities for all.

I am committed to working closely with The Donaldson Trust and other local organisations to help improve awareness and support for neurodivergent individuals. This is about ensuring that everyone—regardless of their neurodiversity—has the opportunity to succeed and contribute to our communities.

Building an Inclusive Future

The Donaldson Trust has evolved significantly in recent years, growing from a school for deaf children into a national centre for neurodiversity. Their commitment to creating inclusive opportunities, raising awareness, and breaking down barriers is something that should be recognised and supported at every level.

“The services provided at Donaldsons are vital in ensuring individuals receive the tailored support they need to thrive in education and beyond. I’m looking forward to working closely with The Donaldson Trust to ensure we continue building a more inclusive society for everyone in West Lothian and across Scotland.”

There is still much more to be done, but through strong partnerships and community-led initiatives, we can create a society that truly values and supports neurodivergent individuals. I look forward to continuing this work and advocating for better services and opportunities for all.
